As part of their Junior Certificate Civiics, Social & Political Education (CSPE) Action Research Project, second year students decided to play their part in the homeless crisis by sleeping in the PE Hall overnight in a Sleep in for Simon. They invited along TY year students to help them raise funds for this very deserving charity. As part of the concept of democracy students had been following the general election and discovered that homelessness was a major problem and this helped them decide on their action project. Human Dignity is also a key concept of the CSPE syllabus. The students wanted to experience what it was like to sleep rough and opted spend the night on the floor of the PE Hall. The students also engaged in a social media blackout which proved to be tougher than anticipated. Students stayed in school from 8pm until 8 am. Fundraising was undertaken over the Easter holidays with students asking for financial sponsorship instead of Easter eggs! Special thanks to Ms. C Barry, Ms. S Reed and Mr. J Deane who braved the tough conditions along with the students. Congratulations to all the students who displayed great initiative and active citizenship on this occasion. Many thanks to Simon and parents for your support.
