The country went to the polls on February 26th 2016 and so did the students of St. Vincent’s. Students voted for their preferred candidates in the Cork North Central Constituency. They presented their School Journals as their polling cards and then received their ballot papers. Much attention was given to the completion of the ballot papers before placing them in the ballot box. The count was carried out by the Second Year Students who acted as the Tellers and were closely overseen by the Returning Officer. There was great euphoria when the Returning Officer declared the result.
The whole process was an example of learning by practical experience. It was a practical and tangible example of the concept of democracy in action which is part of the CSPE syllabus. Students learned about the voting process of Proportional Representation (PR). They also learned of the importance of casting their votes.
The event was very ably coordinated by Ms. M. Fitzgerald (CSPE Teacher)
