Congratulations to second year students Lauryn Homan and Chen Yu (Cherry) Lin who represented St.Vincent’s at the Junior Spiders Finals in Dublin on April 25th. The Awards recognise and reward youth aged 19 and under for the innovative ways they use the internet, especially around website development, school blogs and design. Lauryn and Cherry’s project was one of seven in the Group Project Category short listed for the finals. The students’ designed a website entitled TAPTscience based on the atom and periodic table. They designed three quizzes to examine how much students would know about the atom, periodic tables and the elements. Students were then directed to recommended reading to add to their knowledge and finally they were directed to ‘Fun Stuff’ which included facts, riddles and brainteasers to add to their knowledge.
The project did not win any major prize but both students said it was an honour for them and the school to be short listed for the final in Dublin. Lauryn said she enjoyed the competition experience and that it opened her eyes to what others are designing and developing. Cherry said it was an enjoyable experience, it gave her the opportunity to meet many new people and she will definitely enter the competition again. Both students are currently exploring ideas for their next venture. Their project may be viewed on http://www.juniorspiders.ie/
