Fifth Year Chemistry students learn about spectroscopy through hands on experience, with activities using infra-red and UV ray spectroscopy instruments. The Spectroscopy in a Suitcase Programme, funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry and Science Foundation Ireland, was delivered by Dr. Trevor Carey and Paul Buckley from the Chemistry Department in UCC. Mass Spectrometry is an analytical tool that can give information on the molecular mass and the molecular structure of a substance. Scientists can use this technique to identify gases produced by waste dumps and trace organic pollutants in water or in drug testing. The presentation brought chemistry to life for the SVSS students!
