Congratulations to second year students (left to right) Holly Forde, Lorna Crowley, Anna O'Neill, Leah Casey and Casey Cullnane who were recently awarded prizes by Majella Gould, Litter Warden from Cork City Council. Fifth Year Chemistry students learn about spectroscopy through hands on experience, with activities using infra-red and UV ray spectroscopy instruments. The Spectroscopy in a Suitcase Programme, funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry and Science Foundation Ireland, was delivered by Dr. Trevor Carey and Paul Buckley from the Chemistry Department in UCC. Mass Spectrometry is an analytical tool that can give information on the molecular mass and the molecular structure of a substance. Scientists can use this technique to identify gases produced by waste dumps and trace organic pollutants in water or in drug testing. The presentation brought chemistry to life for the SVSS students!
LCVP students, through the Business in the Community Ireland initiative, successfully partnered with Logistics Company RR Donnelly as a preparation for the world of work. The initiative involved school visits from the Company, incorporating CV preparation and mock interviews, with follow up site visits to the Company's Headquarters in Cork. The project was coordinated by Ms. M. Barrett at SVSS.
Above: Students receive presentation certificates on completion of the programme from the RR Donnelly team and Aoibh Kingston makes a presentation to the RR Donnelly team on behalf of SVSS LCVP students. As part of their Science module, My Microbes and My Mental Health, SVSS TY students, accompanied by Science teacher Ms. Dodd, visited the Gut Instinct Exhibition at the Glucksman Gallery in UCC recently. This novel collaboration challenges students to think differently about how they respond to food and reminds them that the gut affects state of mind and mental health. Dr. Eoin Sherwin and Eimear Ferguson from the APC Institute made a presentation on recent research. This module links four subjects in TY: Art, Science, Home Economics and SPHE.
SVSS girls participate in the IWish Conference, which aims to encourage and motivate female students to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The Conference, sponsored by DELL, EMC and VMware, in association with Science Foundation Ireland, involves student participation in workshops and interactive exhibitions across numerous Third Level Campuses in Cork.
