We extend best wishes to all Third Year and Sixth Year students as they prepare for their State Examinations. Staff and students in SVSS welcomed Educationalists and Health Care Workers from the
Mary Aikenhead Ministries in Australia when they visited the school recently. Congratulations to all SVSS students who had excellent punctuality for the 2017/18 academic year. Congratulations also to the students who made a significant improvement in their punctuality during the year. Being on time for school each morning and being on time for each class is proof on the commitment that each student has made to her education. Many thanks to all parents for your support in the work of our school. Thank you to Ms. E. Lysaght for leading this successful initiative.
Congratulations to Emma Spillane on her recent successes in her sporting area of rowing. Emma won a gold medal in the Relay Race in the South Coast Indoor Rowing Tournament. Emma also took silver in the Singles 500 metre race in the same Tournament. We wish Emma every success in her next competition in the South Coast Whitegate Rowing Ragetta. Congratulations to First Year Student Michaila Hickey on her recent success in winning first place in a Polish Language Competition organised by the Gdansk Academy of Polish Language. Michaila will travel to Poland in June to attend the Awards Gala. As part of her prize Michaila will visit Gdansk and Warsaw so that she can learn about the history and culture of Poland. Well done Michaila and perhaps you may chose a future career working as an interpreter for the EU! SVSS students participated in a ‘Healthy Cities Network’ initiative in Belfast recently. They formed part of a delegation between Cork and Belfast and participated in a major seminar which focused on projects and connections between the two cities. Eve Hannigan, Chloe Morey and Sarah Constant made a major presentation as part of the seminar, on the theme of the ‘Mind Your Head’ programme which is organised as part of the healthy cities initiative.
As well as participating in the seminar, students enjoyed a bus tour of Belfast city, viewing Belfast City Hall, Stormont and the Shankill Road. Students were treated to dinner in Belfast City Hall with Belfast Lord Mayor, Nuala McAllister. Conscious of the education links between North and South, students visited a local Primary School; where SVSS students met and engaged with students and staff from St. Joseph’s Primary School, Belfast. SVSS students joined the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald on this historic visit. SVSS students and staff greatly appreciate the opportunity afforded by the Lord Mayor of Cork and counterpart Lord Mayor of Belfast – without whom, this visit would not have been possible. Thanks also to SVSS Home School Liaison Teacher, Ms. M. Fitzgerald, who accompanied the students. TY student Molly McCoy claimed second place in the 2018 Life Advocate Awards. The annual essay-writing competition, aims to encourage research and critical-thinking on human rights and right -to- life issues.
This year students were asked to discuss the words of Mother Theresa; "Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of our humanity" Representatives Christina and Kate from LifeWorks Education presented the award to Molly at the school recently. Also present was teacher Ms. N. Henry First Year students enjoyed a bonding trip to Tayto Park recently. The students financed the trip from the their savings in the School Credit Union. The Credit Union is run by the TY students and they also accompanied the First Year Students on the fun trip.
