First year Art students recently visited St. FinBarr's Cathedral with their Art teacher Ms. Neill. They learned about the history of this beautiful Neo-Gothic Cathedral. They were also shown the Cathedral's famous Golden Angel which tradition tells us will herald the end of the world by blowing its golden trumpet, thus giving Cork people a head start on the rest of the world!

Congratulations to all recipients on their recent awards which they received due to their positive contribution to the community of St. Vincent's Secondary School Social Work Placement is an vital element of the TY Programme in the school. It aims to highlight the great work carried out every day by local charities and volunteer led organisations in Cork. TY students are given the opportunity to see and experience how many of these organisations contribute to supporting those most in need in our society. Students are currently on placement with organisations such as Penny Dinners, Knocknaheeny/Hollyhill Youth Project, St. Vincent's Centre and the Irish Heart Foundation. We hope that this opportunity may inspire our students to find ways in which they can contribute to improving the social fabric of our society.
A Volunteers' Day is also part of the TY Social Work Module. It involved a series of talks from well known Cork based charities that rely heavily on the support of volunteers. It is hoped that the day will give students a greater understanding of the role of volunteers and how these charities support many people in need. We would like to thank Patricia Phelan from St. Vincent's Centre, Catherine Twomey form Penny Dinners, Timmy Murphy from Cork City FC, Catherine Dineen from Autism Ireland and Helen O' Donovan & Nemo from the Irish Guide Dogs for for giving of their time in raising student awareness to the many needs in modern society. Perhaps it is appropriate to conclude with a comment from one of the TY students Brianna Kenneally when reflecting on the value of such a day she states :'it shows us that volunteering goes a long way and makes a big impact on people's lives' My Education...My Future is a Second Level Art Engagement Project presented by CIT. Many schools from the Cork Area participate in the project. It is part of the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival. Please enjoy some of the work of First Year and TY students from St. Vincent's which was exhibited in the James Barry Exhibition Centre on the CIT Campus in Bishopstown. The project invites students to reflect on the meaning of education on their lives and encourages them to visually portray its impact on their future lives in a personal and unique way
