TY students with our PE Teacher Ms. J. O’ Sullivan organised a Wheelchair Basketball Tournament between St. Vincent’s and the North Monastery to raise awareness for the Wheelchair Association.
Paul Ryan from Irish Wheelchair Association Sport provided the wheelchairs and gave guidance and tips on how to use the wheelchairs. Paul organised some games such as ‘Stuck in the Mud’ and a Wheelchair Conga Line to help us gain confidence in moving about in the chairs.
St. Vincent’s Girls and the Mon Boys were then divided into mixed teams. The winning team then played a combined St. Vincent’s /North Monastery Teachers’ team and the result was a very acceptable 4-4 draw.
It was a brilliant experience for the class because we can now understand what it is like to be in a wheelchair and also to appreciate how lucky we are. As an instructor Paul was inspirational.
We enjoyed playing the matches despite our aching arms and hands and we had great fun with the Mon Boys!
