Wishing everyone peace and joy for Christmas.... Every good wish for health and happiness for 2017! From the community at St. Vincent's Class Aoife, with the support of the SVSS Student Council organised a Christmas themed non-uniform day, 'photo booth' and mannequin challenge as a fund raising venture for Pieta House and St. Vincent's - with Christmas fun and games for all and prize winners galore! Two TY Enterprise Companies display their projects. The Merry Mugs Company was awarded the Best Endeavour Prize for its range of mugs essential for a cosy night in! The ed.Head Company shows great promise for its interactive fun app designed to help Junior Certificate students with their studies.
Congratulations to the SVSS Cadet U16 Basketball Team who are the proud holders of the County Championship Basketball Title following a magnificent victory over Regina Mundi College. The victorious team was coached by Dommie Mullins, Kaylee Kilpatrick and Tracey McCormack.
The arrival of the Christmas season was marked at St. Vincent’s by 40 Transition Year Students as they worked to create a Winter Wonderland Gingerbread Village. The students put huge effort, skill and imagination into building and decorating their gingerbread houses which they displayed as a Gingerbread Village in the school. Fifth class students from St. Vincent’s Primary School came to view the village and participated in a carol concert with the TY students. In advance of the festive activities the primary students enjoyed fun and games in the school PE Hall.
The creation of the Gingerbread Village was the result of a cross curricular initiative between the Home Economics and Mathematics Departments. The design of the village was greatly aided by the students’ numeracy studies. The practical application of co-ordinate geometry, area and perimeter to design the village did much to support the mathematical theory of the classroom. Fifth year students Weronika Chwastek, Aoibh Kingston and Ellen O'Shea recently attended the Open Day of the UCC / CIT Cork Centre for Architectural Education. The students were shown around the Department by College Lecturer Mr Kevin Busby. They met with first and second year architectural students and gained a valuable insight into the world of studying Architecture.
