- TY students, with PE Teacher Ms. J. O’ Sullivan, organised a Wheelchair Basketball Tournament between St. Vincent’s and the North Monastery to raise awareness for the Wheelchair Association.
- Paul Ryan from Irish Wheelchair Association Sport provided the wheelchairs and gave guidance and tips on how to use the wheelchairs.
- It was an excellent experience for the year group who now have some understanding of what it is like to be in a wheelchair. Special thanks to instructor Paul for his commitment and support.
On January 12th, students from first year to fifth year travelled to the BT Young Scientist Exhibition, accompanied by their teachers Ms S. Connolly and Ms. F. Dodd. Students visited the exhibitions, demonstrations and shows. The projects on display confirmed the view that science is all around us, from the air we breathe, to the food we eat, to the oil which fuels our heating and cars. The experience has whetted the students’ appetites to visit again and present their own projects, which they hope to work on and develop this year. Students really enjoyed the day.
Amongst the comments from the visiting group were: “It made me think more about the possibility of a career in science.” “It was inspiring to listen and learn from students from schools all around the country”. “ I loved the project based on bees”
Many thanks to Eoin Derham of ED MEDIA for producing this video.

The arrival of the Christmas season was marked at St. Vincent’s by 40 Transition Year Students as they worked to create a Winter Wonderland Gingerbread Village. The students put huge effort, skill and imagination into building and decorating their gingerbread houses which they displayed as a Gingerbread Village in the school. Fifth class students from St. Vincent’s Primary School came to view the village and participated in a carol concert with the TY students. In advance of the festive activities the primary students enjoyed fun and games in the school PE Hall.
The creation of the Gingerbread Village was the result of a cross curricular initiative between the Home Economics and Mathematics Departments. The design of the village was greatly aided by the students’ numeracy studies. The practical application of co-ordinate geometry, area and perimeter to design the village did much to support the mathematical theory of the classroom. |
