Thomas Jefferson said “A walk about Paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of Life.” This was certainly true for the 25 SVSS students who recently travelled to France’s capital city.
Excitement had been slowly building in the weeks leading up to departure. Students had practised their linguistic skills and researched many of the historical landmarks they would visit.
Arriving early in Paris, students were treated to a guided bus tour of the city where they could enjoy all the iconic sights such as Notre Dame, the Georges Pompidou Centre, the Eiffel Tower, The Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre Museum. Following this, the group then enjoyed a stroll down the Champs Elysees, frequently described as the world’s most beautiful avenue. Home to cafés, luxury specialty shops and beautifully landscaped horse-chestnut trees. A long day was capped off with a relaxing river boat cruise along the Seine.
For many, the main event was a trip to Disneyland. Disney is home to some astounding attractions such as Big Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain, many fabulous musical shows, street parades and plenty of your favourite characters to meet.
Students also enjoyed the architectural beauty of the Sacre Coeur Cathedral and drew crowds of spectators when they joined local street performers in a rendition of ‘Stand by Me’.
The winding cobbled streets of Montmartre offered the picture postcard Parisian scene. Small cafes, restaurants curiosity shops and artists offering the opportunity to purchase a caricature drawing in Place de Tetre.
The final stop on the tour was a visit to the historical Palace of Versailles. The group enjoyed a visit to the permanent collections of the Palace (Grand Apartments, Hall of Mirrors, etc.) and Marie-Antoinette’s Estate.
The success of the trip was underpinned when upon returning home, many students were already asking if they could go again next year!
