Beannachtaí Na Nollag With every good wish for a happy, peaceful Christmas and New Year Merry Christmas to All Health and Happiness for 2018 From the Community at St. Vincent's Secondary School Regular Student Attendance is essential in order for every student to achieve to her full potential. Various strategies have been employed in the school to promote attendance over the past term. Congratulations to second year Class Niamh who had the highest attendance in the Junior School. Congratulations to sixth year Class Roisin who had the highest attendance in the Senior School. Congratulations to all students who have made huge improvements in their attendnace. Be in School All Day Every Day! Fifth year LCVP students raised over €700 for Bothar running various activities in the school. They held quizzes with the junior school and made a presentation on Bothar to the fifth & sixth class students from St. Vincent's Primary School. They ran a non-uniform Christmas themed day and presented prizes to the best dressed staff -member and student. Many thanks to all for your very generous sponsorship of this event: Cathedral Credit Union, RR Donnelly, Super Valu, The Kilkenny Shop, Diamond Divas and Hunny Bunnies
Class Sinead as part of their Justice Group Fundraiser recently held a bake sale and donated the money raised to St. Vincent De Paul.
As part of the SVSS well-being initiative a staff team participated in the Healthy Heart Teachers for Schools Programme and received certification in CPR Training. The team provided CPR training to students across all year groups. Similar training is now under way for all staff and it is planned to offer the training to parents in the new year.
The 4 Steps 4 Survival Step 1: When you see a person suddenly collapse, check for a response – call their name/shake them gently on the shoulder. Step 2: If there is no response call 999 or 112 immediately to get help on the way. Step 3: If they are still not responding and are not breathing normally (gasping or not breathing at all), then make sure that the person is lying flat on their back on the ground. Kneel closely beside them and place two hands on the centre of their chest, one on top of the other while keeping your arms straight. Step 4: Start compressions hard and fast, pushing down at least 2 inches (5cm) on the centre of the chest and push at a rate of 100 beats per minute. Push in time to the tune of the Bee Gees song ‘Staying Alive’ and keep going until the emergency services arrive. If you’ve learned CPR in the past or are willing to give breaths, give 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths, continuing this sequence until help arrives. Handy Tip #1 Learn how to put your mobile phone on loud speaker so you can immediately start providing Hands-Only CPR while you’re calling for help and talking to the dispatcher. Handy Tip #2 Knowing your Eircode number and giving it to the dispatcher when you call will also assist the ambulance in finding you quickly. Courtesy of The Irish Heart Foundation Our whole school approach to Well being incorporated many activities and initiatives to promote happiness and positive mental health among our school population. Students were encouraged to recognise ways in which they can help themselves and those around them.
As part of our sustainability and environmental awareness projects, third year science students decided to re-use the plastic bottles from school lunches. Their task was to create a Christmas tree from the recycled bottles in the Social Area to highlight and start a discussion on the amount of plastic we are currently using. Congratulations to SVSS Cadettes (U16) who won the Cork A League in Neptune Stadium recently. They are the top U16 Girls' team in Cork 2017-2018. Congratulations to the team and coaches Dommie Mullins and Rebecca Lyall from all your supporters in St. Vincent's
